Cover Story
Midas Touch is ebbing away
During normal times when India's batting lived up to its regal status, Mahendra Singh Dhoni's numbers would have been overlooked but these are days when men of impeccable pedigree have failed atop the order and the captain's inability to stem the rot in tandem with the tail has meant that the bowlers have poor totals to defend. Lost in the contrasting terrains of ‘attack' and ‘defence', Dhoni has been a fidgety presence. It is an anomaly that has added to his woes. He also shown a tendency to let things drift after being in control in Tests. By K. C. Vijaya Kumar.

FOCUS
Many feel Dhoni is still the best man to lead
The morale of the Indian team is at its lowest with seven Test defeats in a row overseas. M. S. Dhoni has been singled out for criticism following India's abysmal performance. Is Dhoni really to blame? How good is he as India captain? Vijay Lokapally finds out.
AUSTRALIA DIARY
Haddin, a success story
The diary deeply admires Brad Haddin, as fine a scamster as there ever has been. Haddin has made light of his severe disadvantages to have a reasonably successful cricket career which is something the diary has never managed; unless you count its exploits in 1992, when it hit a four. By S. Ram Mahesh.
LONDON CALLING
His reputation came before him
You only have to look at Andy Flower to know what sort of man he is. Ask him a question and he gives you a serious, considered answer. He is polite, diffident, never steps into the territory that belongs to another and sets an example of fitness and good manners that must rub off on his players, writes Ted Corbett.
INTERVIEW
Engineering entertainment
The flamboyant Indian stumper of yesteryear, Farokh Engineer, recounts the past and takes stock of the present. V. V. Subrahmanyam is all ears.

Football
STARWATCH
McCarthy lauds Fletcher
Steven Fletcher has already scored at Arsenal, Manchester United and Liverpool this season and his form has not surprisingly seen him linked with a move away from the West Midlands club. But his boss has other plans for him.
KICKING AROUND
Belated justice?
He may have been voted back as FIFA President unchallenged, he may now have blown the whistle on Joao Havelange, but presiding over a sea of corruption and assailed for his recent mindless remarks about racist incidents on the field, Sepp Blatter appears to be in danger. It seems he might be replaced before long by Michel Platini. Over to Brian Glanville.
Perfect homecoming
The smile on Paul Scholes' face when he scored in his first EPL appearance at Old Trafford since hanging up his boots showed his appetite for the game is still as big as ever. And it would be no surprise to see the Manchester United midfielder doing a lap of honour at Old Trafford with yet another medal around his neck in May, writes Pete Thompson.
FOCUS
Quartz is all set for its maiden foray
Since July last, Quartz Soccer Club has been training at the institution's football ground under the watchful eyes of UEFA ‘B' Licence coach Frank Braner. The German is but one of the many plus points for the side, which has its headquarters in Kozhikode, Kerala. By A. Joseph Antony.
FEATURE
Focus shifts to Africa
The Coupe d'Afrique des Nations (CAN) has always seen many top players from European clubs choosing their country over club commitment, says Shreedutta Chidananda.
LET'S BE FRANK
Card-waving row blown out of proportion
Is there really any manager in the country who does not demand immediate action when he feels his team or one of his players has been unfairly treated? It is just that Mancini does it with his hands instead of hurling a tirade of barely comprehensible abuse from the touchline.

Volley Ball
NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP
Peaking at the right time
While Indian Railways lived up to its billing as the favourite in the women's section, it wasn't so in the case of Kerala in the men's section, where the competition, especially among the top eight, was very intense. Only the best team on that day could succeed, writes S. Sabanayakan.
